Hello, DramaSpot readers!
This week I am recommending the Romantic-Comedy KDrama: Oh My Venus.
Starring Shin Min Ah, So Ji Sub, Jung Gyu Woon, Oh Soo Jin, Sung Hoon, and Henry Lau.
Created by Yoo Byeong-sool and Park Mae-Hee this 16 episode series ran from 2015-2016.
Watch it on DramaFever, Viki, and AmazonPrime.
Kang Joo Eun (Shin Min Ah) also known as Daegu’s Venus was known for her beauty in her high school years; girls wanted to be her and all guys want to date her. Aspiring to be a lawyer Kang Joo Eun works hard to get into law school and also meets her First Love Im Woo Sik (Jung Gyu Woon) a competitive swimmer. Fast forward 15 years later Kang Joo Eun has achieved her goal of being a lawyer but has become overweight from the amount of work she has. On the eve of Joo Eun’s and Woo Sik’s 15th Anniversary, he ends the relationship.
We are then introduced to a mysterious man in Los Angeles known as John Kim, a personal trainer, who we later learn his name is Kim Young Ho. When a rumor starts that Young Ho and his client are in a romantic relationship he leaves to go back to Korea. At the same time, Joo Eun has left for a business trip in the states and is sent back as quickly as she arrived. While on the flight to Korea Joo Eun faints to which Young Ho provides medical attention and ends up cutting her out of her corset. Later on, Joo Eun finds out that Young Ho is the famous trainer John Kim and asks for his help in her goal to lose weight.
After watching the first episode I just want to watch more and see what happens between Joo Eun and Young Ho! Shin Min Ah is hilarious and the transformation from her slim frame to a larger size is crazy to see. Overall this is an interesting drama looking at how South Korean society treats and looks at overweight women since they are so focused on appearance and beauty, but that is not the point of the romantic comedy.
If I were to recommend this drama to a friend who has never seen a KDrama before, I’d say that this is similar to the beginning of Legally Blonde where Elle is broken up with and then proves what everyone thinks of her is wrong. Oh My Venus is a story of second chances and proving to others that you can do the unthinkable.
